For roughly a decade, the dominant ideology of software engineering has been “don’t run servers.” The cloud-native movement evangelized managed services, serverless functions, and a general posture of radical outsourcing — treat compute as a utility, pay for what you use, never think about hardware again. This ideology produced genuine gains in developer velocity and genuine catastrophes in long-run cost structures. Companies that moved wholesale to the cloud for the convenience of the early years found themselves unable to reason about their own infrastructure bills at scale. The interfaces are open-source-flavored, which makes the lock-in less visible, but the economics are recognizable.

This conversation resonates strongly with industrial economics literature on vertical integration and the theory of the firm. The question of what to make versus what to buy is never finally settled — it cycles with technology costs, coordination costs, and competitive dynamics. Right now the buy-everything-as-a-service era is producing the conditions that historically make vertical integration attractive again: unpredictable supplier pricing, loss of internal capability, and strategic dependence on a small number of counterparties.
