What I find myself returning to is not the villainy, which is lurid enough to speak for itself, but the question of what conditions would need to obtain for something like this not to happen. The answer seems to require a kind of institutionalized epistemic humility — a culture that treats domain expertise as non-negotiable rather than as an obstacle for the sufficiently visionary to transcend. Silicon Valley’s disruption mythology is not going away, and medicine, energy, and infrastructure are all in its sights. The lesson of Theranos is that the cost of getting this particular romance wrong is not a failed product launch. It is patients bleeding from wounds made by a machine that was never what it claimed to be.
